Fortnite sound developer /u/sweedinmusic, aka Seth, outlined some of the changes coming to Fortnite’s audio. Fortnite v8.0 launched with some significant changes to the in-game sounds. In v8.0, Epic replaced all the weapons sounds in the game with updated versions.
The community’s reaction to the v8.0 changes is mixed. Numerous Twitter complaints have centered around the sound of Assault Rifles and vertical footsteps.
Assault Rifle Sound Improvements
Since v8.0, the sound of the AR has been a bit…overbearing. Many players are complaining that the firing sound is too loud. Here’s a clip showing ‘Ghost Bizzles’ during the ESL tourney. He doesn’t hear the enemy breaking into his box because of the loud AR fire.
Here’s what Seth had to say about upcoming AR sound changes:
“Improvement to the standard AR sound so that it’s not overbearing on the shooter. Tightened up the sound, so it’s more of a BLaaam versus a BLAAAM.”
Build Piece Destruction Sounds
In the next patch, build pieces destroyed by an enemy will be louder. For example, a sniper from behind shoots and breaks your back wall – the sound will be much louder than it would be if you or a teammate shot your wall.
Seth explained an upcoming change to the sound of footsteps.
“Footstep audio blends in the above/below layers, rather than abruptly switching between them.”
He elaborated further:
“Prevents jarring footstep transitions between floors directly above or belowShould clear up some confusion.”
The Palm Tree Umbrella
The opening and closing sounds associated with the Palm Tree umbrella will be quieter. The small riff that plays when opening will not be changed. Everyone who wins a match in Season 8 gets the Palm Tree umbrella.
Seth stated that Epic hopes to have these changes implemented in the v8.01 patch, which would be imminent.
